The Hero with a Thousand Faces by Joseph Campbell was published in 1949 and has had a far reaching impact on storytelling ever since. In fact, the hero’s journey as described by Campbell was even credited by George Lucas for the Star Wars storyline. The book itself is a long read but you can find plenty of summaries that show the stages of a typical hero as they face a call to adventure, challenges, temptations, transformation, atonement and return. There are many versions of it to refer to but the book goes in depth into why it resonates with us as humans. If nothing else, it will help you appreciate the power of stories and how the familiar pattern of a hero’s ups and downs gets our attention.
