Oblique Strategies by Brian Eno and Peter Schmidt

Submitted by: > Rob Comley

If you are familiar with Brian Eno or Peter Schmidt you might think about how people as creative as them keep their edge. I always thought creatives are just able to come up with ideas from thin air and probably some regularly manage to do that. However, it is comforting to know that there are techniques and tools like this one, designed by successful creators themselves, so there’s hope they really work. Oblique Strategies are a set of cards with a sentence or just a few words on each one. They are described as ‘one hundred worthwhile dilemmas’ – or challenging constraints that can help an artist to overcome creative blocks by thinking of a different way to approach things. When you’re stuck in a rut, just pull out a card and see if it helps. If you want to try it out without buying the full set of cards go here (refresh the page for a new card). The little black box of cards is a nice little addition to your creative space though so worth buying (Amazon or The Eno Shop)
