Expressing displeasure on social media is not easy when the choice is usually only ‘like’ or ‘comment’. Outside of the downvoting function available in some places, there is no easy or quick way to show negativity without having some kind of dislike button. Adding comments can quickly escalate and requires more effort or more clicks. If you only want to indicate you don’t like it and move on, there is no option on most social media today.
Could this lack of a dislike button have created a build-up of negative feeling?
Leaving people frustrated without a way to express themselves could have driven other behavior as a result. Brigading (special interest groups getting together to down vote something they dislike), swamping social media feeds with an opposing agenda, fake accounts, and trolling could be consequences of platforms that only allowed us to express positivity.
